Prevacid Chronic Kidney Disease Lawsuit
The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) February 2016 issue featured a study in which people taking the anti-ulcer medication Prevacid may have an increased risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD), 20 to 50 percent higher those not taking Prevacid. The study showed that taking PPIs more than once a day or for longer periods also increased kidney disease risk.

Prevacid Lawsuits
Our law firm handles drug injury lawsuits not as a large class action but on a case-by-case basis. Each case is prosecuted according to its own merits. In a Prevacid lawsuit, each case of medical injury is unique. Each must be evaluated separately by our lawyers and legal experts. Past drug injury lawsuits have resulted in compensation for:
- Medical costs
- Future medical costs
- Lost wages
- Pain and suffering
Our drug injury lawsuits typically accuse drug manufacturers of failing to provide adequate warnings, marketing medications in an illegal manner, and/or producing dangerous or defective medications. Some drug makers have been found to have knowingly hidden the risks of medications; when that happens, they may also be subject to punitive damage awards.
If you or a loved one has been injured by Prevacid, you may need legal assistance.

What is Prevacid?
Prevacid (lansoprazole) is one member of a group of medications known as Proton Pump Inhibitors. PPIs work differently than other antacid drugs used to treat medical conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and peptic ulcer disease (PUD).
Prevacid was once the second highest-selling prescription in the U.S. with annual sales of over $3 billion. Prevacid is made by Takeda Pharmaceuticals, which enjoys sales of some $14 billion yearly.
Pevacid, Proton Pump Inhibitor Drugs
Concerns over Prevacid and other Proton Pump Inhibitors reach back to 2006 or earlier. However, the latest results indicate the risk of kidney failure is higher than previously thought. Researchers indicate that many patients taking Prevacid or other PPIs could have been discontinued without any adverse effects. They found many PPI prescriptions may have been given without a clear medical diagnosis.
In addition to the newly announced risk of chronic kidney disease, Prevacid may also raise the risk of other problems:
- Heart attack
- Bone fracture
- Hypomagnesemia (low magnesium levels)
- Birth defects
Proton Pump Inhibitor OTC Medications
PPI medications were first introduced in 1988. Statistics show that as many as 14 percent of U.S. adults may have taken prescription versions of PPIs. All three of the most popular PPIs (Prevacid, Nexium and Prilosec) are now available over-the-counter. Some rank among the top-selling OTC meds in the U.S. Many people may have taken OTC versions such as Prevacid 24HR without advice from a physician for simple “heartburn” or dyspepsia. They may be unaware of the dangers.
