Nexium can cause acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, kidney failure.  Acute interstitial nephritis and acute kidney injury can manifest within four months of beginning Nexium.

Heartburn Drugs & Kidney Problems

Heartburn drugs like Nexium can double the risk of kidney problems. We are investigating proton pump inhibitor lawsuits against the makers of Nexium and other PPIs. Contact us for a free legal consultation if you or a loved one developed kidney injury after taking Nexium or another PPI.

Nexium Heart Attack Risks

Nexium and other heartburn drugs – such as Protonix, Prilosec, Prevacid – have been linked to an increased risk of heart attack. People who take proton pump inhibitor drugs such as Nexium or other PPIs are up to 21% more likely to suffer a heart attack than people who don’t use them, according to researchers from Houston Methodist Hospital and Stanford University. NPR broadcast a PPI heartburn drugs and heart attacks story on May 11, 2015.

What is Nexium

  • Nexium (generic name esomeprazole) is a proton-pump inhibitor used to treat GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), duodenal ulcer disease, and erosive esophagitis.
  • Proton-pump inhibitors are a group of drugs designed mainly to reduce stomach acid (gastric acid).  Proton pump inhibitors are believed by some “experts” to be the most powerful and effective inhibitors of stomach acid secretions on the market today.
  • Nexium is also used to prevent gastric ulcers in patients receiving long-term NSAID therapy, and to treat Crohn’s disease patients with gastrointestinal ulcers.
  • Nexium may also be used to prevent gastric ulcer caused by infection with helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), or by the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
