Cobalt 2010 for webGeneral Motors just added almost 50,000 more cars to the 14 million it has already recalled this year for ignition problems.

GM recalled the Pontiac G8 and Chevy Caprice for Ignition Switch issues just last week. The 2008-2009 Pontiac G8 and 2011-2013 Chevrolet Caprice are just the latest of some 30 million cars recalled this year by the beleaguered automaker.

On Oct. 3, GM posted a letter on the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website (pdf) which it had sent to dealers Sept. 4: “There is a risk, under certain conditions, that some drivers may bump the ignition key with their knee and unintentionally move the key away from the ‘run’ position. If this occurs, engine power, and power braking will be affected and power steering may be affected, increasing the risk of a crash.”

This is the sixth recall of 2014 that involves the ignition system in some 14 million GM cars which feature an ignition key that can slip out of the ‘run’ position. Only 2.6 million of these auto, for whatever reason, are covered by GM’s $400 million victims’ compensation fund.

Twenty three deaths and 53 accidents have been attributed to a bad ignition switch in those vehicles. General Motors has received nearly 900 claims so far, including 153 death claims and 70 for life-altering injuries that include paralysis and/or amputation (pdf).

The potential for the key to slip out of the run position exists in all of the 14 million autos; however, GM distinguishes between the ignition switch flaw in the 2.6 million cars and the problems in almost 12 million other cars, trucks and SUVs which GM says are linked to the ignition key, or the keyhole of the ignition cylinder.
